UNC’s Lunatic Fringe — It DOES Exist!

June 20, 2013

One of the common refrains you hear from Chapel Hill regarding the Wolfpack fanbase is how “delusional” we supposedly are. How we think every year is the year we win it all in every sport, that we would rather beat Carolina and lose every other game, etc.

Passionate, State fans are. There’s no doubt about that. Delusional? Perhaps sometimes, but no more than any other fanbase. Every school and team has its share of fans who suspend reality in order to see the world as they assume it is.

During his time at State, Lee Fowler, beloved former AD, coined the phrase “lunatic fringe” to describe those members of the NC State fanbase. I’ll use that term to describe the contingent of UNC fans who seem to be oozing to the surface during this College World Series.

They’ve become vocal on the message boards (the typical domain of the crazies), saying “State cares only to beat us (UNC) and will sacrifice the arm of Carlos Rodon and 1,000 virgins to ensure it happens.” Despite the fact Rodon would only be pitching on 3-days rest, they convinced themselves Elliott Avent, out of desperation, will command Rodon to take the hill in today’s elimination game for both schools.

Pitching Rodon on three days’ rest is far fetched and foolish, but it was at least a possibility at one point yesterday because no one knew who would be pitching at the time.

Where that theory went from crazy to f***ing insane was when the “Rodon WILL pitch” refrain persisted AFTER NC State’s official Twitter account announced it would be Brad Stone (whom I had heard was going to pitch) instead of Rodon.

Nope, that sort of official announcement isn’t good enough to derail crazy. It’s Rodon, by god, because WE STATE FANS DEMAND IT (supposedly). Elliott WILL start Rodon because he knows if he doesn’t, a legion of angry State fans will mob the charter plane when it lands at RDU and parade his severed head around on a pike.

Despite reading a few nutso posts here or there, I was prepared to not post anything about it. That changed when this was brought to my attention by @ReevesiXi, from the Inside Carolina Diamond Heels board:

Typical move by ncsu—Why announce this tonight? They are doing nothing more than trying to get into the psyche of the UNC players. They may warm up Brad Stone, but you can believe that Rodon will be ready to go from the first pitch.
This is nothing more than a ploy by avent . Can you imagine the vitriol that avent would face if he announces Stone, sticks with Stone, and ncsu loses while Rodon is on the bench?
ncsu is in the same position as UNC, i.e., whichever team loses tomorrow goes home and their season is over.
This is nothing than a #$%@# move by Avent and demonstrates just how desperate he is . Stone may face the lead-off batter, but Rodon will be on the mound at the first sign of trouble for ncsu.
Avent cannot go wrong by making this announcement. If Stone starts and does well, he will look good; and if Stone starts and does not do well, he will be replaced by Rodon and it will be noted that avent did all that he could but the gamble did not work.

Ladies an gentleman, that is a special brand of crazy right there. A brand of crazy heretofore we’d been told only existed on one side of this rivalry–the boorish, inbred side in Rawlee.

But crazy travels on a two way street in this rivalry. (Well, it traverses a weird-ass street where traffic flows in all directions at all times, including out of Chapel Hill.)

You know, Tar Heel fans, we’re not so different, you and I. We’re all one big, crazy family, cut from the same cloth, whether you like to believe it or not.
