Is Today “The Day?”

March 14, 2011

The ACC Tournament is over; along with it, State's season proper (the season ended weeks ago, truth be told, all but for a few remaining games on the schedule).

The question now becomes: "When will a move be made?"

Georgia Tech wasted no time in moving forward with sending Paul Hewitt home on a $7.2 million-paid vacation, presumably to get a jump start on the coaching selection process. The folks in Atlanta have done as we have, compiling a list of candidates for the job, and I think it's a perfect list for where Tech is at the moment: short on cash but with a very good job opening.

There's not a great deal of crossover at the top of the list, but I would imagine Chris Mack and Cuonzo Martin appear on both schools' lists. Where they slot would probably differ.

With Tech already on the ground searching, should State join the game, too? Should they make a move to "resign" Sidney before the NCAA Tournament begins?

As I wrote last week, I think it would be wisest to wait. By retaining Sidney in his current position, it allows Yow to conduct her fact finding operations without a vacant job causing undue scrutiny on our top targets. Having a coach means you're not "technicially" looking for a replacement. Once he steps down, it's official. And as they say, "it's on."

It's possible we could hear something today, or tomorrow, but I doubt we'll hear anything from Tuesday night—next Monday morning. It doesn't make much sense to make a public change when everyone's focus is turned elsewhere.

If what we've been reading is true, and Sean Miller is target #1 on Yow's board, this weekend could be very crucial to when the change goes down. Arizona as a #5 seed faces a dangerous Memphis team in the dreaded 5/12 matchup, and should they advance past the opening game, they would face either a strong-but-fading Texas team or a popular bracket buster in #13 Oakland. Exiting the first weekend for the Wildcats won't be easy by any means.

If Miller's willing to listen to an offer from Yow—and I'm hesitant to even acknowledge Miller is even a possibilty—there's a faint, FAINT, possibilty this search could be over and done with by this time next week.

But there I go again…getting my hopes up. It's a State fan's lot in life to be burdened by unreasonable hope. 1983 taught us to dream; it just didn't warn us about the consequences.

Back on to the crux of the matter. I think Debbie is handling this properly so far, and I think next week is when we'll see Sidney resign. *Coach Lowe is not scheduled to appear at State's weekly coaches show at Crabtree Valley Mall, but I wouldn't read that as a move is iminent; I think she wants to shield Sidney from a throng of reporters that would undoubtedly be on hand to ask him questions before or after the show.

I could be wrong, but my gut tells me next week.

*UPDATE: I'm being told plans are, at the moment at least, for Lowe to be at tonight's show. As with anything coaching-change-related, that could change. If you're planning to go tonight for the purposes of thanking/supporting Lowe, be sure to check the web before you head that way just to be on the safe side.

*UPDATE #2: I just got confirmation from NC State Media Relations that Sidney Lowe WILL BE at the Coach's Show tonight at CVM. So apologies all around on my part for misleading you with what I wrote earlier. If you were planning to go, he'll be there, per Media Relations.

I’m thinking the announcement on Lowe will be tomorrow. Pulling for Texas on Sunday and hoping this search ends next week. Want Sean to do well, but I want him at State badly.

I heard from someone–let’s say, in the know–that Tuesday is likely the day.
