State Women Beat #13 UNC By 16 At Home, 88-72

February 21, 2011

It's been a season of injuries and near-misses, but the Lady Pack sealed the deal tonight against their biggest rival, UNC, at Reynolds Coliseum in a hardfought 88-72 victory.

Neither team shot particularly well from the field (both finished with sub-37% shooting performances), and State was even worse from beyond the arc (5-21, or 23.8%), but behind Amber White's 23 points (nine of which came from 13 free throw attempts), State bested the Tar Heels in both halves for the win.

The game was actually close in the second half, when the Tar Heels closed to 57-55, but White and the Pack went on a 19-4 run to put the game away. White herself scored seven of those 19 points.

While State scored 14 points off 19 UNC turnovers, the Pack set a new program record for ball control as it only committed four turnovers the entire game.

Any win over UNC is huge, but this one is particularly sweet given the travails this team has endured during the season. A rash of injuries early on hampered State's chances at success, and crushing losses at home to Duke by one and Virginia in 4 overtimes were bitter pills to swallow.

But this win will go a long way to putting those tough losses in the rearview mirror and hopefully propel State to success in the upcoming ACC Tournament.
