Well Now, Wait A Minute…Wilson May Not Be Gone Just Yet

June 8, 2010

Per the N&O and, it looks like Wilson intends to sign with the Rockies, not hire an agent, play football in the fall and then begin his baseball career.

Steven lays it out pretty good here:

I don’t know the particulars of the NCAA rules involved with this sort of thing, but after reading up on Jake Locker’s situation (Locker signed a six-year deal with the Angels last summer and continues to play football for the University of Washington), it looks like the two main things are:

1.) He can’t hire an agent.
2.) He’ll have to give up his football scholarship and pay his own way.  If Wilson signs a baseball contract, he’ll be considered a walk-on.

Interesting, to say the least. The NCAA rule book seems to be its quirkiest when dealing with baseball, for some reason.

I thought initially when I heard Wilson say he planned to return to play football in the fall it was a means to increase his negotiating leverage, but the latest accounts all seem to indicate that he indeed plans to return.

Just another chapter in the interesting career of Russell Wilson.

i’m glad he’s coming back, but I must say I am surprised. If baseball is indeed his future, this seems like the time to make the jump. And it surprises me that the Rockies would allow him to return. Or at least make it as difficult money-wise for him to return. But, as I said, I’m glad he’ll be back.
