ACC Baseball Tournament Begins Today

May 26, 2010

The Pack (#7) faces Clemson (#2) tonight at 8:00.

It’s imperative the Pack win at least one game in the tournament if State hopes to make it into the NCAA tournament. Coach Elliott Avent has been lobbying on the Pack’s behalf to get them in regardless of what happens this weekend…

GREENSBORO — North Carolina State coach Elliott Avent went on and on in defense of his baseball team’s résumé and how the Wolfpack deserves a positive fate in terms of the NCAA Tournament’s selection committee.

He went so far as to suggest the Atlantic Coast Conference re-assess its scheduling and procedures if the Wolfpack is left out of the NCAA field.

While politicking for his team, there’s another factor as the ACC Tournament begins today at NewBridge Bank Park. If N.C. State wins the tournament, it won’t matter.

“I don’t want to know,” Avent said Tuesday of ultimately how the committee views his team.

In many eyes, the seventh-seeded Wolfpack (36-20) is the textbook bubble team. Avent said N.C. State has done enough during the course of the season that a 0-3 record in the round-robin portion of the tournament shouldn’t exclude the Wolfpack from playing in an NCAA regional.

…but I’m not sure how much good it will do. State HAS to win at least once, in my mind, to even begin to feel like they have a shot at making the NCAA’s.
